Whyalla Cuttlefish
Every year in winter, thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish gather on the shores of Point Lowly in South Australia to mate. The cuttlefish congregate between May and August each year, only meters from the beach, and are very docile.
The water is cold, especially by June/July, but well worth the experience to see these magnificent creatures in such large numbers. Their body shapes and colours can change in an instant, and they will have you mesmerised as they jostle with each other to perform the annual mating rituals.
Whyalla is the closest hub, and that's a little over a 4-hour drive from Adelaide, so it's worth staying the night. There are local dive shops, such as Whyalla Diving Services, where you can rent gear and tanks. However, be sure to bring some warm clothes for after your dive.
