Wardang Island
Wardang Island boasts several ancient shipwrecks, making it an ideal destination for a shallow boat dive.
There are nine known shipwrecks located around this low-lying island off Port Victoria. International sailing vessels, such as the Songvaar and the Notre Dame D’Arvor, came to Port Victoria to load grain and were wrecked there in 1912 and 1920, respectively. The Songvaar had loaded 40,000 bags of wheat, and its master was ashore gaining clearance when it was noticed the vessel was low in the water and listing to port. Being fully laden and heavy, the vessel sat on its own anchor, which pierced the hull, holding it to the seabed. This was the same day the Titanic sank, on April 14, 1912.
You can also often run into seals when diving around Wardang Island, which makes for a memorable dive.
To get to Wardang Island, you need to launch your boat from Port Victoria, and it's a short run across to the island in anywhere from 20 minutes, depending on weather conditions.
