Every year in winter thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish gather on the shores of Point Lowly in South Australia too mate. The cuttlefish congregate between May and August each year only meters from the beach and are very docile.
The water is cold especially by June/July but well worth the experience to see these magnificent creatures in such large numbers. Their body shapes and colours can literally change in an instant and they will have you mesmerised as they jostle with each other to perform the annual mating rituals.
Whyalla is the closet hub and that is a little over 4 hour drive from Adelaide so its worth staying the night. There are local dive shops like Whyalla Diving Services if you need gear and tanks, but make sure you take some warm clothes for after your dive.
